BBC Radio panel: The enduring legacy of harm

This lunchtime I was part of a panel on BBC Radio TalkBack with William Crawley. We were discussing domestic violence, femicide, and prevention. I highlighted the plight of child-survivors of domestic abuse.
It was a poignant moment when a man called in and said;

“I grew up with my mum getting hit on a daily basis by my dad. These weren’t the heat of the moment lash-out events. They were heavy beatings, and it was going to head one way, until my mum found the strength to walk away. There is help. Please walk away. I think about what my mum went through every day I am now 46. Today she is a stronger woman than ever.”

This shows the enduring legacy of harm perpetrators cause and how hard it is to move on for children who had these early experiences. It is so good to hear his mum is safe and strong, despite surviving such horrendous abuse.
